The ritual of applying oil
On touch, texture, and making a little more room in the day.
The silence of the beginning of a day is one that is fully yours.
The light finds its way into the bathroom. The floor is still cool beneath your feet. The whiff of coffee floats in the air. And on the shelf, a small glass bottle catches the morning light.
You turn the cap, warm a few drops between your palms, and gently place them on your cheeks. The oil moves slowly across your skin, leaving behind a soft sheen. There is nothing to get through, nothing to optimise. Only the simple sensation of your hands against your face.
We often talk about skincare in the language of results: hydration, radiance, renewal. And rightly so. A product should earn its place on the shelf.
But there is something else to the experience of applying an oil. Its weight in the palm. The way its texture changes with warmth. These details are easy to overlook, yet they are what make a product tangible. They take it beyond its formulation and into the texture of everyday life.
A ritual doesn't need to be elaborate to become meaningful. It doesn't require a perfectly slow morning or a bathroom lined with beautiful things. More importantly, it is the act of giving your attention to what your hands are doing, instead of letting the moment pass unnoticed.
This is part of what makes certain objects stay with us: the way they invite us to feel while doing it, and inhabit a moment fully.
The day will gather pace soon enough. The messages will arrive; the plans will change. For now, there is the warmth of your hands, the softness left on your skin, and the small pleasure of not having hurried through it.
A few drops. A moment of your own.
